Brightman, Bree and Lang, PLUS Updates!

NightBallet is very pleased to announce the upcoming Jim Lang- Steve Brightman- Bree reading, a NightBallet Press/Crisis Chronicles Press/Mac's Backs collaboration. The event will take place at Mac's Back's Books on Coventry, 1820 Coventry Road, Cleveland Hts, OH, on Wednesday, March 14, at 7 PM. That's only one week from today! Jim Lang will be reading from his new chap, Coyote Moon, published just last month by NBP, Bree will be reading from the melody, i swear, it's just around that way, published recently by CCP, and Steve Brightman will be reading from his brand new chap, Sometimes, Illinois, which NBP will be publishing this weekend! Open mic will follow the features. Having been intimate with both Lang's and Brightman's poems, and having read Bree's book as well, I promise you an evening of poetry you won't soon forget- hope you can join us!

Updates: My day job has been brutal lately, and I've fallen a little behind on my publishing schedule. However, if you are one of the NBP poets waiting to have your chapbook published, be assured I haven't forgotten you. I've been working on multiple manuscripts, formatting whenever I had the time, and I'll be publishing several more chaps soon. The next one is Elise Geither's Monologues For Poets, a truly delightful collection of themed poems and play excerpts. She has seen the proposed chapbook cover, so I'm posting it here (Steve Brightman has not seen his cover, so I'm going to save his for a future posting).

The photo, by the way, is from a pic taken at John Burroughs' house at Christmas- it's the beautiful smile of his granddaughter, Jada.

Heather Ann Schmidt tells me that she was stopped by an Indian woman on the street in Chicago, who bought her chap Batik on the spot. Have poetry, will travel!

Cleveland poet Jean Brandt has promised me a manuscript (yay!) and so has Elyria poet John Burroughs. And I've started collecting poems for the 2012 NightBallet Press Broadside Series, including a half-English, half-Spanish poem from Skylark Bruce. We'll have an exciting year here at NBP! I'll be posting more updates as we go along. For now, hope to see you at a local poetry reading soon!

New York poet George Wallace will be coming to Cleveland for a special reading Friday May 11, 2012 at the Gypsy Beans and Baking Company, 6425 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, 6 PM. The last time he read here was for Green Panda Press's Tres Versing the Panda event in May of 2009, so you know the opportunities to experience Wallace's marvelous poems in his own voice are few and far between. Our thanks go to Charlotte Mann for hosting him at this reading.

Howl at the Coyote Moon! Night/Chronicles-Crisis/Ballet reading at Mac's Backs tonight!

Tonight, three poets will bring their own unique brands of poetry to a very special event: the first joint NightBallet Press/Crisis Chronicles Press featured reading, in conjunction with the famous Mac's Backs Books reading series. Call it our Night/Chronicle-Crisis/Ballet event!

T. M. Göttl will debut her book A Hurricane of Moths (published New Year's Day 2012 by NightBallet Press), J. E. Stanley will read from his new chap Rapid Eye Movement (published late 2011 by Crisis Chronicles Press), and Terry Provost will perform poems from An Uncountable Infinity Of Orgasms (published late 2011 by NightBallet Press). The poems contained in these chaps hum with energy and echo with excitement, and you won't want to miss the opportunity to hear them read by the poets themselves!

Of course, these chaps will be available at the reading, through the authors who will have copies for sale, though publishers Dianne Borsenik and John Burroughs, and from Mac's Backs- Suzanne DeGaetano bought several copies to sell at the store.

You Are Invited to Attend the End of the World

This year, on Friday 12/21/12, the world as we know it will end... at least, that's how some people interpret the Mayan Calendar. The world and its people may change through transformation (extraterrestrials landing, a special alignment of the spheres creating New Age enlightenment) or cataclysm (the poles reversing, a rogue planet or asteroid hitting earth), but the pundits have it right down to the very date- the Winter Solstice of 2012.

So it would seem that Prince was wrong- it's not "Two thousand zero zero party over oops out of time", and Chicken Little was right- "the sky is falling!" Not one to ignore such an occasion, NightBallet Press is pleased to announce its first anthology ever, Buzzkill: Apocalypse, An End of the World Anthology. Fittingly enough, the theme is the End, whatever one might perceive it to be. Publication is planned for 06/21/12, the Summer Solstice, so we can all enjoy reading it for six months before the Big Event.

This is where YOU come in. You are invited to attend the End of the World by submitting a poem or two for the anthology. NightBallet will select the tastiest scenarios and compile them in Buzzkill: Apocalypse.
Please note the following guidelines:

Submit only one or two poems- no more, please. NightBallet has a day job and will be hard-pressed to keep up with everything, as it is. One or two page poems will work best with the chap's formatting.

Send the poem(s) in the body of an email to nightballetpress@gmail.com. If your poem requires a certain formatting, you may attach it as a Word doc as well, making note of it in the email. If you send a submission to any other email address associated with the press or with the editor, I can't promise I'll read it. It's hard for me to keep up with my emails, too.

Put Submission - (your name) in the subject line of the email.

The poem(s) may be previously published, as long as you retain all rights to them. Please acknowledge any previous publications in the body of your initial email.

Please send a one or two line bio with your submission. Keep it brief and concise. NightBallet reserves the right to edit it for length, if you get too carried away.

The deadline is May Day, May 1st, of this year. The earlier you send your submission, the better the chance of it being chosen for publication.

Contributors already include J. E. Stanley, Robert Miltner, Lyn Lifshin, Michael Salinger, Terry Provost, Steve Brightman, and John Burroughs, and this promises to be an, um, "killer" book, so don't delay- there's no time to waste! Send your submission today!

Happy New Year 2012- Year of the Dragon!

NightBallet Press is excited about all the possibilities and opportunities this new year offers, and is thrilled to announce several news items on this very first day of 2012!

First, a new chapbook by one of NightBallet's favorite poets, T. M. Göttl, is officially published today. Göttl's chap A Hurricane of Moths takes the reader on an enchanted trip through richly-imagined lands. Her poetic Voice is lush and beautiful, and you'll want to read this book straight through to the end... trust me!

Next, NightBallet is pleased to announce that it will be publishing its first anthology this year, thematically based on the idea that, according to the Mayan calendar, the world will end in some way on 12-21-12 (Winter Solstice). The title is Buzzkill: Apocalypse - An End of the World Anthology, and NBP will be posting more on this soon- stay tuned!

Finally, for now, NightBallet Press is happy to say we're very busy, formatting chapbook manuscripts from Lyn Lifshin, Zach Ashley, Heather Ann Schmidt, Elise Geither, Jim Lang, Christopher Franke, and Kevin Eberhardt- with several more tasty manuscripts expected to arrive within the next few weeks. Life is good.

Hot off the press- the last two broadsides in the 2011 NightBallet Press Broadside Serises are published!

Dan Smith of Cleveland has two poems featured in his broadside: "Wine on a Rope" and "The Rubaiyat of the Green Shazam". Both are dynamic and exciting poems, written in the way that only dan smith can write. NightBallet cannot wait to hear him perform (yes, perform, not read) them!

John Burroughs of Elyria, Ohio (and Lix & Kix, Snoetry, and Crisis Chronicles fame), had a (100, 000 Poets for Change) commemorative broadside, "For Change Is", published earlier in the series. Now, NBP is proud to present his classic freedom of speech poem "Low Kay Shun" as the cap to the 2011 Series! NightBallet hopes to add a video of him performing this poem to this site, soon.

Pushcart Prize nominees announced!

NightBallet Press is extremely pleased and proud to announce the Pushcart Prize nominees for work published in 2011. Chansonette Buck and her chapbook blood oranges have been nominated. Tim Murray and his broadside poem "Certified Outlaw" have been nominated. Congratulations to both of these fine poets!

Chansonette Buck spent her childhood “on the road” as stepdaughter of a Black Mountain poet, living all over the American West, in England, and in Spain. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley, where she concentrated on 20th-century poetry and poetics and wrote a dissertation on childhood trauma as the source for William Carlos Williams's poetic obsessions. She has a BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art, and has won awards for her visual art, her poetry, and her teaching. Chapters of her memoir Unnecessary Turns: Growing Up Beat have appeared in Why We Ride: Women Writers on the Horses in Their Lives (Seal Press, May 2010) and Polarity, and several poems have been accepted for publication over the next year. blood oranges is her first chapbook.
